Meet Joan

Joan Lipuscek MS LMFTA

I am a marriage and family therapist who has counseled children, adults and families in English and Spanish for over twenty years. I grew up in Puerto-Rico and moved to Houston in 1989, but have fond memories of the island. I have always enjoyed working with people from diverse backgrounds and feel passionate about helping children overcome a wide range of psychological issues.

Before starting my private practice, I worked for DePelchin Children's Center counseling adolescents facing a variety of mental health issues. This experience motivated my desire to continue working with children and teens in my private practice. My specialties include counseling children and teens with ADHD, anxiety, depression, parents divorcing, abuse, eating disorders, trauma, oppostional behavior, self-harmLGBTQIA+ issues, grief and school challenges.

My goal is to be respectful and kind while helping clients move though the therapeutic process as quickly as possible. I believe children and families have the ability and resilience to overcome the challenges they are bringing to the therapy.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

As an LMFT, I am a mental health professional trained in psychotherapy and family systems. I can diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders within the context of child, family and marital systems.

MBSR and Meditation

I pursued postgraduate studies in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and meditation at Brown University School of Professional Studies. MBSR is an evidence-based program that teaches mindfulness practices to help individuals manage stress, anxiety, and pain. Through meditation, body awareness, and mindful movement, MBSR empowers people to respond to life’s challenges with greater calm and resilience.

Child and Family Therapy

While working at DePelchin, I provided English and Spanish Solution-Focused Therapy to at-risk youth and their families. I led therapeutic conflict resolution and life skills school groups with Communities In Schools. I also offered family and individual therapy to children that had recently immigrated from South and Central America. Working with these families was personally rewarding and an enriching experience for me.

Houston Galveston Institute (HGI)

HGI is internationally recognized for producing innovative work in family therapy. Working with adults and families at HGI was intellectually stimulating as I was able to collaborate with a group of talented therapists to help clients create new possibilities in their lives.
